Assemblywoman Ginny Fields

Ginny Fields' Biography

In March of 2004, Ginny Fields won the Special Election for the New York State Assembly’s 5th District.  Assemblywoman Fields serves on the following committees: Aging; Consumer Affairs and Protection; Corporations, Authorities and Commissions; Oversight, Analysis and Investigation; Real Property Taxation; and Tourism, Arts and Sports Development.  She is the Chair of the Sub-Committee of Child Product Safety and has passed legislation regarding pool safety, banning dangerous toys and products, and making New York’s recall laws stronger so that our children are protected.

Assemblywoman Fields is Co-Chair of the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses for NYS, where she fights for the rights of sportsmen and women across New York State.  She also serves as the Vice President of the Italian-American Legislators’ Caucus and is a member of the Women’s Caucus of the New York State Assembly.  She also founded Business and Professional Women in Islip Town.

Assemblywoman Fields is a strong voice in Albany representing her constituents and her community.  She continually fights for the interests of small business and local industries within the 5th District. She recently was instrumental in saving the jobs of over 250 workers at GE Aviation in Bohemia when she discovered that the company was planning to relocate to another state.   She opposes the Governor’s proposal to sell wine in grocery stores which would essentially close small businesses and increase underage drinking. During her term as a NYS Assemblywoman, she has persistently voted against raising taxes.  She has sponsored many bills to repeal and freeze spending and advocates cutting the New York State budget, rather than  raising it since so many New Yorkers are leaving to move to other states and we are losing our families.

With an extensive background as an environmentalist and activist, Ginny Fields remains an advocate for the unique natural resources found on Long Island and has championed open space acquisitions.  In 2010, she received the prestigious Hoyt Award from Audubon New York.  Most recently she has funded efforts to reopen the world-renowned Connetquot River State Park Preserve Hatchery, supported and assisted with projects at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum and coordinated multiple levels of government to address the dire need for dredging in many waterways around Long Island.  She is adamantly fighting the Governor’s proposal to close some of our state parks.  She began the first retreat for Long Island women called Casting For Recovery, a group that teaches breast cancer survivors how to fly fish.  Assemblywoman Fields also started the first Women’s Outdoor Weekend which teaches women outdoor sports, hobbies and activities.

Ginny Fields is a great supporter of first responders, emergency services and our military.  She has secured funding to assist emergency services organizations and veteran services groups.  Each year she sponsors a very successful drive to send supplies to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.  She has introduced legislation to crack down on sex offenders, freeze state spending and during the recent heroin epidemic in Suffolk County has sponsored legislation that would empower parents of addicted children, along with many other efforts to improve the quality of life for her constituents and advance government efficiency.

Assemblywoman Fields is a full time legislator who strives to be as accessible to her constituents at all times.  She travels between her District Office in Bayport and the Legislature in Albany when in Session.  She prides herself in ensuring that she and her staff offers assistance to residents of the 5th District and believes elected officials should act as a conduit for people to work with different levels and departments of government.  Ginny Fields prides herself on being a non-partisan public servant to her constituents—not a politician.

As a life-long resident of Suffolk County, wife, mother, homeowner and taxpayer, Ginny Fields knows the concerns of Long Island residents and is dedicated to ensuring that Suffolk County remains a place where families look forward to a bright future.  She and her husband have two grown sons, two step-daughters and three grandchildren.
